and open air theatre show

“PACKED OR A SHORT STORY OF WHO FAILED TO TAKE WHAT.”

Written and directed by: AGATA DUDA-GRACZ

On 8 March 2018, the Jewish Theatre and the Shalom Foundation will organize a meeting by the plaque at Gdański Train Station commemorating those who left Poland. A plaque featuring Henryk Gryberg quote “They left behind more than they possessed” was unveiled by the Shalom Foundation in 1998 and since then, every March 8th, March emigrants and all those who find the dramatic events of the past important, meet here, by the plaque.

Following the meeting at Gdański Train Station, which after all those years has become a symbol that reminds us of all the stations used by the March emigrants who had to leave Poland, an open air play “Packed or a Short Story of Who Failed to Take What”, written and directed by Agata Duda-Gracz, will be presented. It will be the sum of many interrupted stories. A story of what is lost, when one human fails to keep track of another human. And about all those things that cannot be taken with you.

Organizer: Jewish Theatre in Warsaw in cooperation with the Shalom Foundation

THE OPENING OF THE SHOW “A FEW FOREIGN WORDS IN POLISH”

Directed by: ANNA SMOLAR, script and dramaturgy: MICHAŁ BUSZEWICZ

Anna Smolar will present the show about March '68 from a completely different perspective. Born and raised in Paris, Smolar is the daughter of March emigrants; she will present a play, in which she focuses on the generation of children of those, for whom March is a common experience. Written by Michał Buszewicz, the story will base on the relations of the older generation who continues to find Poland their home country and the younger generation scattered around the world. An important contribution, this show will also base on the conversations Mike Urbaniak had in Israel, the United States and Europe.

This is how Anna Smolar and Michał Buszewicz talk about the show:

“We meet on the 50th anniversary of March '68 and take a look at the younger generation. Who are the children of March emigrants? What was their childhood like, how was their national, cultural and religious identity shaped? Does March continue to live inside us and is it possible that it will come out in the future generations? What does the young generation know about the past events? What do we inherit, what sort of memories, images, clichés? How much of March do we carry with us? How does the exchange between generations, whose experience is so totally different, work? Why conversation with parents about the past is something so difficult for us to undertake?

THE OPENING OF THE MONODRAMA “IDA KAMIŃSKA” PERFORMED BY JOANNA SZCZEPKOWSKA, written and directed by: GOŁDA TENCER; music: PAWEŁ SZAMBURSKI

Among March emigrants was the long-term artistic director of the Jewish Theatre, Ida Kamińska. She was an outstanding stage and film actress, the only Polish actress so far nominated for the Academy Award for best actress in a leading role - in the 1967 Czechoslovakian movie “Obchod na korze,” directed by Jan Kadar and Elmar Klos, in which she played a shopkeeper.

Ida Kamińska is not only an excellent actress but also a great director, who staged both Jewish and Polish as well as world plays. She translated plays and was an accomplished teacher and playwright. Her whole life, she kept organizing her theatre - at first she led traveling troupes and then, after the war, she became the director of the National Jewish Theatre in Warsaw. As a result of the anti-Semitic smear campaign in 1968, she decided to leave Poland and emigrate to the US, where she lived until her death.

The show dedicated to the remarkable artist will bring back the memory of her. It would be impossible to exaggerate her role in the development of the art of theatre in the 20th century Poland.

For one month, the students will have meetings with March emigrants and those, who stayed in Poland. Young people will be asking questions, such as: what was their youth in Warsaw like, which places were particularly important for them and why; how to store memories, how to protect them from oblivion, how to save and keep your element of youthfulness, good memories, remembrance, community, longing; how did their lives change after March '68? The outcome of the conversations and walks will be a sentimental map of emigrants, interviews, films and an exhibition.

The partner of the project Zichrojnes is Śródmieście District Council of the Capital City of Warsaw.
